Trinity Boys Choir has appointed Bernard Hughes as its Composer in Association. Hughes will write a work for performance in September 2027, when Trinity School in Croydon welcomes girls as part of its move to co-education.

Nicholas Mulroy, director of Trinity Boys Choir, described Hughes’s music as ‘imaginative, lyrical, sympathetic to sing, and enjoyable to listen to’. The new piece will celebrate the arrival of girls at the school and the formation of the younger section of Trinity Girls Choir.

Hughes said his career working in girls’ schools had given him considerable experience writing for girls’ voices. He said he was looking forward to ‘helping to bring the girls fully into the musical life of the school’.

Trinity Boys Choir has already recorded Hughes’s Perhaps. His other work for voices includes a piece for the BBC Singers at the 2021 BBC Proms and The Death of Balder, a radio opera based on a Norse myth. In an interview accompanying the announcement, Hughes said he often uses irregular rhythms and changing time signatures to capture the way words sound when spoken.
