Having successfully overcome the challenges of last year’s online event, WOMEX 21 looks to encompass some of what was learned with the natural advantage of live performance and face-to-face contact with like-minded people from around the world.
‘We recognise that there will still be challenges in our industry this October,’ says the appeal by its organisers, Piranha Arts and AMG Music. ‘And we are pursuing inclusive initiatives to reach and interact with our community across the world.’
The organisers are particularly interested in suggestions that increase the cultural, regional, gender, genre, performance tradition or other forms of diversity in the international music scene. WOMEX has a long tradition of promoting the widest ranges of music through its international showcases and, as usual, 2021 aims to build upon that momentum.
The proposals invited fall under four categories: showcase, club summit, film and conference and can be submitted via the dedicated website. The suggestions for the official programme need to be received by Friday, 16 April and will be judged by a new independent, international jury formed just for this year, otherwise known as the Seven Samurai.
The 2021 expo will take place between 27-31 October.
