Spotify launches awards show based on streaming data

Music streaming giant Spotify has announced its first music awards show, the Spotify Awards, which will be based entirely on user-generated data.

According to the company, users’ ‘plays, patterns, and habits will help determine the award categories, finalists, and winners, for the Spotify Awards by providing a true reflection of what fans are listening to’.

In partnership with Turner Latin America, the Spotify Awards will be broadcast live on 5 March 2020 from Mexico City to all of Spanish-speaking Latin America. Mexico city, dubbed ‘the streaming capital of the world’, has the most listeners on Spotify, ahead of New York and London.

During the third quarter of 2019, Spotify’s total monthly active users grew 30% to 248m, including 113m paying subscribers.
