The Musicians’ Union (MU) has published The Young Freelancer’s Guide to Mental Health and the Music Industry, which looks at common challenges facing freelance musicians, outlines strategies for meeting them and explains how to access support.
The new guide, written by mental health expert Tamsin McLarty and Ben Jones for the Musicians’ Union, addresses a range of problems, including self care, burn out, setting boundaries, anxiety and depression. The guide was created by and in consultation with the MU’s Young Members’ Network.
According to the MU, ‘Life as a musician can be exciting, satisfying and rewarding. The flexibility can give you a real sense of agency and freedom. But it can also be demanding, unpredictable, isolating and stressful. And if you feel those things then we can tell you, with total certainty, that you are not alone’.
