International choral festival latest casualty of Hong Kong unrest

The World Youth and Children Choral Artists’ Association (WYCCAA), the Hong Kong-based leading organiser of international choral festivals and competitions, has announced the cancellation of its forthcoming World Choir Festival, due to take place in Hangzhou, China, in July 2020.

According to an announcement on WYCCAA’s Facebook page, the official event partner in Hangzhou decided unilaterally to call off the event because of the deteriorating political situation in Hong Kong.

Originally scheduled from 18-23 July 2020, the 2020 World Choir Festival – Hangzhou would have been the first of WYCCAA’s World Choir Festival series to have taken place outside Hong Kong.

WYCCAA said:

‘Regrettably, this is the first time in 22 years of our association that we were forced to call off the festival. We are deeply saddened that we have lost a precious opportunity to connect the choral world with a series of world-class performances, competitions, masterclasses, workshops and cultural exchanges for an estimated 120 participating choirs.

‘This is an obstacle, but also a stepping stone for us to overcome and to continuously strive for more.

‘This was not an easy announcement to make. However, through the ups and downs over the years, our love of choral singing will draw us together very soon, and we look forward to welcoming you at the next festival with open arms!’
