HK Philharmonic first Asian orchestra to be nominated for Gramophone award

The Hong Kong Phil‘s performances of Wagner’s Ring Cycle have earned the orchestra a nomination as Orchestra of the Year in the prestigious Gramophone awards, marking a first for an Asian-based orchestra.

Given out annually since 1977 by the UK-based magazine, the Gramophone Awards are the Oscars of the classical music world. The 10 nominees for the 2019 Orchestra of the Year Award are: Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin; Staatskapelle Berlin; Boston Symphony Orchestra; Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra; Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra; Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; London Symphony Orchestra; Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia – Rome; San Francisco Symphony Orchestra; and Les Siècles.

The winner of the award will be decided by public vote. Recordings of all nominated orchestras are available on Apple Music and via the Gramophone website, where listeners can submit their votes.

Voting closes on 7 September 2019.
