Rehearsal Orchestra: Britten Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra & Howell Lamia
About the event
Britten takes us on an epic tour of the sections of the orchestra. Subtitled Variations and Fugue on a theme of Henry Purcell, Britten uses a simple hornpipe from Abdelazer to show off the colours, ranges and characteristics of the different elements of a modern symphony orchestra, in a real showpiece and a staple of the orchestral repertoire.
Howell was only 21 when Lamia (based on the Keats poem of the same name) was given its first performance at the Proms by Sir Henry Wood in 1919. The work was such a success that it was played five times that season and was soon heard all over England. The piece received a centenary performance at the BBC Proms in 2019.
