ORA Singers Composer Competition
Applications for the 2022 ORA Singers Composer Competition are now open!
The 2022 Competition marks the third instalment of this scheme run by ORA Singers, with its aim of nurturing and developing a new generation of choral composers through educational mentoring and opportunities.
Who is the competition open to?
ORA Singers is on the hunt for passion and potential in young composers aged 18 or under from UK non-fee paying state-schools, who wish to further their compositional development.
Ten Finalists will be selected to receive 10 hours of one-to-one tuition and support from industry-leading composers, who will guide them through the composition of a new choral work. Mid-way through the Competition, Finalists will attend a Workshop with ORA Singers who will work through their piece with a professional composer, and offer tips and guidance to help develop their new piece.
Finalists will then be invited to attend the Final of the Composer Competition, where each Finalist’s completed piece will be performed in concert by ORA Singers to a live audience and a panel of experts, who will decide on our Winners! Finalists will also receive a live recording of their work from the concert for posterity.
ORA Singers is excited to be expanding the Apprentice scheme to accommodate up to 40 young composers, from UK state schools. Each Apprentice will receive 8 hours of compositional masterclasses introducing them to many aspects of choral history and compositional technique. By the end of the programme, Apprentices will be encouraged to write their own small choral work, which will be looked over by our Workshop Leaders.
To apply, please follow the link below where you will need to submit the following by 12pm, Monday 7 February 2022:
- Completed Application and Personal Statement Form
- Entry Composition or excerpt of Entry Composition (PDF and/or mp3 file)
The Entry Composition must be the original work of the applicant, and be no longer than 10 minutes in length. It can be anything the applicant has already composed, or a new work, and it can be for any instrumentation/number of voices. Please note, the Finalists selected will be required to write for a cappella voices. We therefore advise applicants who have already written a choral work to submit it.
