MusicFest Aberystwyth Saxophone summer course

In 2022, throughout our annual summer festival, the artists-in-residence can be found coaching ensembles, leading workshops, giving masterclasses and performing in the Festival concerts. Students also have the opportunity to perform in public and enjoy free entry to all festival events. Please note that we have reduced our fees to make the courses more accessible to all; there are also generous bursaries available.

The MusicFest Aberystwyth Clarinet Saxophone course is designed to be a fun and thought-provoking source of summer inspiration for classically-based saxophonists whether they are of school-age, at conservatoire or university, or adult amateur musicians.

This year the saxophone course will focus entirely on solo and recital music for saxophone, and will be led by the internationally respected saxophonist, Kyle Horch, with the assistance of the pianist Anya Fadina. Kyle and Anya will work individually and in group masterclass sessions with participants on their repertoire, offering approaches to instrumental technique, interpretation, practice, performing, and listening. Participants will have the opportunity to perform their repertoire with Anya in a MusicFest concert during the week. They will also have free access to all concerts at MusicFest Aberystwyth, including a recital to be given by Kyle and Anya. An ideal course for learning saxophonists who are preparing for Grade or Diploma Exams, auditions of any kind, competitions – or just looking for a fruitful short period of learning, playing, and concert-going at a vibrant summer festival.

The course is open to saxophonists aged 15 or older, Grade 5 standard and above. There is a maximum of 12 places, so to be sure of a place, book early.=

Kyle Horch is saxophone professor at the Royal College of Music in London. Since making his London debut at the Purcell Room in 1989, he has performed as a soloist and chamber musician at many venues in Britain and abroad. He has worked with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Uproar Ensemble, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, the chamber ensemble ‘Counterpoise’, the ‘Art Deco Trio’, and Michael Law’s Piccadilly Dance Orchestra. Russian pianist Anya Fadina studied at the Special Music School in Yekaterinburg, and at the St Petersburg Conservatoire, from which she graduated with distinction. Since moving to Britain in 2001, Anya has appeared as a soloist with the Kingston Philharmonic and given recitals in Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, and in Denmark. On a return to Yekaterinburg, she performed in a festival of British music which had the participation of the composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, supported by the British Council. Other UK solo, duo, and chamber performances have included concerts at St John’s Smith Square, the Barbican, the Dulwich Festival, the International Musicians Seminars at Prussia Cove, and the South and North Wales music festivals. Since 2017, she has been a regular recital partner for saxophonists Kyle Horch and Lars Lien at Aberystwyth MusicFest. In addition to her concert work, Anya teaches piano at Westminster School and Westminster Abbey Choir School in London.
