MusicFest Aberystwyth Classical Vocal summer course
In 2022, throughout our annual summer festival, the artists-in-residence can be found coaching ensembles, leading workshops, giving masterclasses and performing in the Festival concerts. Students also have the opportunity to perform in public and enjoy free entry to all festival events. Please note that we have reduced our fees to make the courses more accessible to all; there are also generous bursaries available.
Singers participating in the MusicFest Aberystwyth Classical Vocal summer course will be given the opportunity to work in a relaxed and sensitively guided environment. The course has been designed to enable the participants to gain a broader knowledge of vocal repertoire and greater confidence in performance and technique. Each day will start with a guided warm-up session for all participants, who will then separate into groups usually no larger than 10 students.
- Course Directors:Veronica Veysey Campbell and John Flinders
- Vocal Tutors: Dinah Harris, Dr Ron Morris, Veronica Veysey Campbell
- Pianists/coaches:Libby Burgess, John Flinders, Christina Lawrie, Andrew Robinson
The course is appropriate for singers aged 17 upwards who are serious about their singing. Applicants not known to the tutors may be asked to provide an audio recording to confirm their suitability for the course. The tutors’ approach is informal, but always supportive and encouraging. It is a busy and vibrant week and our aim is that everyone leaves with even greater enthusiasm for singing and with improved skills. The course aims to cover many aspects of singing, including: performance skills, technique, interpretation, style, communication, languages, musicianship, confidence building, experience of working with a pianist and preparation for auditions.
The teaching will be in masterclass-type sessions predominantly on classical repertoire, and participants can expect to work vocally every day. The importance of attentively listening to other students being coached as well as performing themselves is strongly emphasised throughout the week; the coaching will be specific yet will also make general points that the participants can apply to their own performances. There will also be one-to-one coaching sessions with Andrew Robinson.
Successful applicants will submit choices of repertoire by Monday 2 May. These will be a maximum of five pieces, as follows:
a) an English art song
b) three pieces, to be chosen from among the following categories (no more than one from each category):
- Italian song
- French mélodie
- German Lied
- Operatic or Oratorio aria
- Musical Theatre
c) ‘Lucky Dip’: a song from any genre (this may include a category previously chosen)
Final repertoire selections will be made by the tutors and the students will be notified well in advance of the course so that the music can be thoroughly prepared and memorised.
The cost of the course is £595 which includes a pass to all concerts during MusicFest.
Early-bird discounts are available on all courses paid in full before the end of April. Generous bursaries are available for all students in full-time education. Please note that self-catering accommodation (in new student halls of residence on campus with en-suite facilities) should be booked separately at a cost of approximately £50 per night.
It is recommended that course participants arrive by mid-afternoon on Saturday, 23 July and leave on the morning of Sunday, 31 July. There will be a singers’ ‘show-case’ concert on Saturday 30, followed by an evening concert to which all the singers will be invited as audience members. This is followed by a cabaret in which singers are encouraged, but not obliged, to participate. On the first and final Saturdays a buffet (sandwiches, quiche etc.) will be provided free of charge.
