MusicFest Aberystwyth Clarinet summer course

In 2022, throughout our annual summer festival, the artists-in-residence can be found coaching ensembles, leading workshops, giving masterclasses and performing in the Festival concerts. Students also have the opportunity to perform in public and enjoy free entry to all festival events. Please note that we have reduced our fees to make the courses more accessible to all; there are also generous bursaries available.

The MusicFest Aberystwyth Clarinet summer course

Tutors: David Campbell and Anthony Friend with Edward Leung (piano)

The course will be limited to eight participants, who should be over the age of 16 on July 1st 2022. They should have a minimum standard of ABRSM Grade 7 and are requested to bring both a Bb and A clarinet as well as a music stand with them.

From Sunday through to Friday the sessions will run from 9.30 to 12.00 and 3.30 to 5.30 in Penglais School, a short walk from the accommodation and the Arts Centre. Over the lunch break participants will have the opportunity to attend a lunchtime concert in the Great Hall, as well as a masterclass featuring a different discipline each day. At 6.30, 7.15 and 8.00 there will be further performances to which all Summer School attendees have free access.

All clarinet students should prepare two works from the standard repertoire for clarinet and piano as well as two movements from the works by Mozart, Brahms, Weber or Bliss for clarinet quintet (clarinet and string quartet).

As well as daily sessions with Edward Leung, our resident collaborative pianist, there will be two sessions with the Solem Quartet and one with the Sacconi Quartet in which course members will be able to play quintet works with these fine professional ensembles.

Repertoire choices should be submitted to Joan Rowlands, our Administrator, by 1 July. There will also be workshop sessions on topics such as How to Practise, Coping with Nerves, Aspects of Technique and Intonation. On the final Saturday all participants with have the chance to perform in a Showcase Concert.
