Ceòlas Summer School 2022

Unbeatable tuition in Gaelic music, dance and language from the best traditional musicians in Scotland and Canada; guided walks, house cèilidhs and village-hall dances in the strongest Gaelic-speaking community in the world; authentic Hebridean culture alive in its heartland.

The Ceòlas summer school is an experience like no other. For a week in July, the Isle of South Uist is alive with an amazing buzz and electricity, Gaelic music, dance, language, a returning diaspora and over a hundred summer school students of all ages and backgrounds. Experience the essence of Gaeldom – the warm hospitality, the rich heritage and culture, the return home of family.

The summer school runs from 9am-4pm Monday to Friday, with an earlier finish on Wednesday (3pm). There is a selection of classes – first choice and second choice – allowing students to learn more than one subject to promote interdisciplinary learning. There are two First Choice classes in a day, and one Second Choice class, in addition to one Gaelic for All class.

A range of afternoon and evening events are a highlight of the summer school, including guided walks, music sessions in the hotels, and village hall dances and cèilidhs. The house cèilidhs are reserved for students of the summer school only. Most other events are ticketed, with pricing supplementary to the summer school.

Cost and bookings

[To be confirmed for 2022] The summer school fee (£275) covers tuition through the week (concerts and dances not included), including first choice, second choice, crossover and Gaelic for All classes. There is an islands’ rate (£180) for those with a residential address in the Western Isles.

For students aged 14-17 years, there is a youth rate of £75 (please see youth piping and youth fiddle). Young musicians aged 16-25 year may apply for a full scholarship, funded by the Highland Music Trust.
