Event Description

Throughout the year, Chetham’s opens up the school, inviting visitors to meet staff and students, explore the purpose-designed school building, hear rehearsals in progress and find out more about the sshool’s music programme, academic study, boarding and welfare.

Open Days are a perfect opportunity to discover more about Chetham’s, whether you’re thinking of applying, finding out more on behalf of your music students, or simply interested in discovering what Chetham’s does!

Prospective students and parents will have opportunities to have all of their questions answered – from financial and academic arrangements, to catering and weekend activities. All visitors will be guided by current students, and the schedule for the day includes time and space to meet individually with instrumental staff, the Head and Bursar, as well as to view the spaces in which Chetham’s students live and learn.

Oxford Flute Summer School continues to offer flute players of all ages and abilities a wonderful week of playing, learning and making friends.

Oxford Flute Summer School offers three distinct options for different levels of players, but with many shared experiences and an emphasis on active participation.

There are classes for everyone; for instance preparation for college auditions and competitions, 18th century performance style, extended techniques for beginners, performance and platform presentation skills.  Other activities are more specific to each option. Students on the Oxford Players and Oxford Performers options are encouraged to attend and listen to all classes including Oxford Masterclass option.


Oxford Players

Students on the Oxford Players  and Oxford Performers options are encouraged to attend and listen to all classes including Oxford Masterclass option.

Included are:

  • an individualised timetable for each student
  • two private flute lessons
  • one private piano session
  • one group lesson
  • daily tutored ensembles
  • daily technique classes
  • daily flute choir
  • concerts and masterclasses

This course is for:

  • players who want to develop their skills
  • enthusiasts who enjoy group playing
  • suggested standard, grade 5 to grade 8 and beyond

Oxford Performers

The Oxford Performers course contains all the modules of the Oxford Players course and provides additional performance opportunities.

Oxford Performers aims to challenge more experienced flautists with a focus on performance, auditions, exams or improving teaching skills. Choosing this option enables students to prepare with confidence for the next step in the development of their musical career.

Included are:

  • all elements of the Oxford Players Course, and in addition
  • a masterclass performance
  • a concert performance

This course is for:

  • students auditioning for music colleges
  • teachers updating their performance skills
  • players preparing for Diploma exams
  • suggested standard above grade 8

Choose this course if you’re looking for a challenge and for performing experience.

Oxford Masterclass

Intended for conservatoire students, postgraduates and professional players, the course offers guidance on the way to achieve the next level in your performance. There will be classes on a practical approach to professional auditions and on building a successful career.

Included are:

  • working with Robert Winn and other internationally acclaimed teachers
  • between 6 and 8 hours of intensive study daily
  • masterclass performances
  • a concert performance

This course is for:

  • advanced players of conservatoire level
  • postgraduate students
  • young professional players

Choose this option for active participation in all classes, a class size limited to 15 players and because the week of intensive study prepares you for your next steps in your career.

Coming from a musical family, Chakraborty’s father and teacher is the renowned singer Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty. Hailed as a prodigy when she first emerged as a performer, Chakraborty has established herself as one of the finest interpreters of the Indian classical style, completely devoted to the music and its spiritual depth.

This concert showcases the National Youth Orchestra for Indian Music’s latest theme of combinations, and Samyo combines inspirations from around the Indian subcontinent with new ideas inspired from around the world.

With a dazzling array of instruments and voices, the series of unconventional creations combines elements of Indian classical, folk and popular music. The orchestra harks back to its Hindustani and Carnatic roots with instruments, ideas and melodies that are brought together by new compositions written each year.
