“an unforgettable experience, brought about not only by excellent organisation but by the trust and friendliness of
“fantastic enriching experience”
In 2021 we are determined to move forward and offer the warmest, most generous and inspirational support for pianists and pianophiles that we possibly can. Who knows what the future will bring?
Online and onsite
We have learnt so much from 2020 – the pandemic has completely changed our lives. We would be ‘throwing the baby out with the bathwater’ if we were to totally forget about online possibilities for 2021, and that is why the 21st edition of our beloved summer school will set new standards and parameters by simultaneously being both online and onsite in Manchester.
About the Summer School
Founded in 2001, the Chetham’s Piano Summer School is now firmly established as one of the most vibrant, respected, inspirational and universally friendly events of its kind in the world. Participants enrol from all five continents and are inspired, guided and educated by an extraordinary faculty of over 60 internationally celebrated performer-teachers.
With seven recital halls, 100 practice rooms, on-site accommodation and meals, Chetham’s Piano Summer School has proved time and time again to be an outstanding course, a universal haven for everyone who loves piano. We are frequently questioned about eligibility and standards for enrolment. The truth is that the summer school is spiritually and materialistically large enough to include literally everyone who loves piano!
By streaming all the major concerts and lectures as well as by making available online major parts of the teaching that happens on the course daily, we are immediately opening out our unique opportunities to participants who may be unable for all kinds of reasons to travel to Manchester in person.
We want all piano lovers to be able to take part in what we offer. For this reason there is now the opportunity to have online lessons exclusively if you register to be a participant on the course. We have created a bespoke online programme that will include virtual coffee mornings, as well as the opportunity to watch ‘live’ all the major recitals, lectures and a sizeable proportion of the teaching directly from Manchester.
For those who are able to come to Chetham’s in person and work face to face with our extraordinary faculty as well as attend all of the events, the programme surely speaks for itself. However, it may be possible for participants to have one or more lessons online with selected members of the online faculty by using the excellent AV machines that are now firmly installed in many of the teaching rooms in Chetham’s school.
Who should join us
Here are group listings of some – but not all – of the participants who have enjoyed Chetham’s Summer School in recent years:
- Young concert artists preparing to enter top international competitions such as the Leeds (18–35)
- Adult amateurs of all levels, including those returning to the instrument after decades of neglect as well as those who play to professional standard (30–85)
- Teenagers who enjoy piano but do not intend to pursue music as a professional career
- Talented children under the age of 12
- Beginners of any age who may come for just a few hours or more
- Students from specialist schools, junior and senior conservatoires and conservatoire students
- Observers, including parents, music teachers and music lovers of all ages
- School pupils who wish to audition for specialist music school or apply for entry in the future to conservatoires and university
The practice facilities and teaching rooms are of exceptional standard. In 2017 the outstanding new Stoller Concert Hall was opened- offering a world class performance space for the evening recitals.
Along with this exceptional venue for large scale concerts and recitals, there are many other smaller venues – ensemble rooms – which are available for teaching, practising, and participants’ concerts during the course.
The summer school also benefits from the use of the Carole Nash Recital Hall and the newly refurbished Whiteley Hall, a venue which is now used for international masterclasses during the school academic year.
The course schedule of lectures and evening recitals again promises to be entertaining and thought-provoking, providing a balance and contrast to the one-to-one tuition which will take place during the morning and afternoon sessions each day. All accommodation is within the school. The atmosphere is made unique by the fact that faculty and participants dine and socialise together enabling everyone to feel very welcome – so much so that there are many ‘regulars’ who come every year.
