Editorial and content guidelines

Product reviews



MUSIC:ED publishes independent reviews of books, software and other resources.

Reviews explain, in clear, jargon-free language:

  • who the product is for, eg ‘teachers’, ‘parents’, ‘professional musicians’
  • what the product’s purpose is, eg ‘music notation’, and how well the product meets the needs of target customers/users
  • quality of design
  • how the product meets the needs of users with disabilities
  • the product’s value for money
  • how and where to buy the product


Our standard structure is as follows:

  • Title
  • Header image (usually a product shot)
  • Key information
    • what it is
    • manufacturer/publisher
    • where to buy
    • cost including details of any education discount
  • Pros (bullet list)
  • Cons (bullet list)
  • Body of review (usually 500-1,200 words)
  • About the author (up to 250 words, plus informal photo (480px x 480px) and contact information – any/all of website, email address, LinkedIn profile, MUSIC:ED Community profile, other relevant social media)


  • Header: landscape image sized at 1440px x 540px
  • Body of review: any sizes, but the minimum dimension needs to be at least 360px (so 480px x 480px is fine but 420px x 240px isn’t)

All images have captions and photographer credits if applicable.


  • Body of review: up to two relevant videos may be included. Source: YouTube or Vimeo urls, together with captions and videographer credits if applicable
