What is Music Generation?
Music Generation is Ireland’s National Music Education Programme that transforms the lives of children and young people through access to high quality performance music education in their locality. Through partnership, we create rich and diverse ways for participants to engage in vocal and instrumental tuition delivered by skilled professional musicians, across all musical genres and styles.
Initiated by Music Network, Music Generation is co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds, the Department of Education and Skills and Local Music Education Partnerships.
In 2009 U2 and The Ireland Funds gifted a €7m philanthropic donation to music education in Ireland with a very clear intention:
“What we want to do is really simple. We just want to make sure that everyone, whatever their background, gets access to music tuition. That’s the idea.” Bono
The philanthropic donation was gifted to seed-fund phased implementation of Music Network’s Feasibility Study for a National System of Local Music Education Services.*
“We had been looking for some time for a way to get involved in an initiative in music education in Ireland. After talking to various people in Ireland about what to do, we came to the conclusion that the Music Network scheme is really well thought out and that we, in partnership with the Ireland Funds, should just get behind it.” The Edge
Since it was established, Music Generation’s impact on transforming the landscape for performance music education in Ireland has been remarkable. With Local Music Education Partnerships now established in 25 areas of Ireland, the programme currently creates some 48,500 opportunities each year for children and young people to access tuition in their local communities, as well as creating more than 400 employment opportunities.
In December 2017 the Irish Government announced its commitment to support the nationwide expansion of Music Generation by 2022. This extraordinary achievement has been made possible through the continued support and collaboration of our Donors – U2 and The Ireland Funds, with support from Bank of America and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation – our Government partners, the Department of Education and Skills, and the network of Local Music Education Partnerships.
