Theory Compass Academy is The Glasgow School of Music’s structured small-group music theory pathway for school-age students developing from early foundations through the Grades 1–5 journey. Each six-session cohort is matched to an appropriate stage rather than attempting to cover the entire pathway in one course.

Students develop notation, rhythm, written confidence, musical terms and connected musical understanding in a supportive small-group setting. The Academy complements instrumental or vocal lessons by strengthening the theory knowledge that helps students understand what they are playing, singing and reading.

Places are reviewed for suitability, current level and group fit before being confirmed.

Entry requirements

Suitable for school-age students who can manage short written tasks, structured weekly progress and small-group learning. Grade 1 is a common entry point, but cohorts may be matched to an appropriate stage within the wider Grades 1–5 pathway. Suitability and current level are reviewed before a place is offered.
