The BBC has announced details of BBC Young Musician 2018.
Open to percussion, keyboard, string, brass and woodwind players who are UK residents of Grade 8 standard who will be 18 or under on 1 January 2018, the biennial competition celebrates its 40th birthday next year.
Broadcast on BBC Four and Radio 3, the competition will reach its conclusion on 13 May 2018 when three musicians perform a full concerto with a professional orchestra at the Grand Final.
The BBC Young Musician Jazz Award will also return with applications open later this Summer.

Eligibility
You may enter in one or more of the instrument classes as long as the following three criteria are satisfied.
- Qualification: you should have achieved Grade 8 standard
- Age: you should be 18 or under on 1 January 2018
- Residency: you must be a resident of the United Kingdom (including the Channel Isles and Isle of Man) at the time of entry and for the duration of the competition – until May 2018
